This century

begins with the end of the Enlightenment Variorum tradtion (1803, 1813, 1821), ends with the beginning of the second generation of Variorum texts (1871-), each one an encyclopedia of a given play, and produces almost double the number of collected works and single versions of our play.

The editions of Singer (1826) and Knight (1841) represent the new dispensation, without the encrusted layers of commentary dating from the first Variorum of 1773.

The conjectures and emendations industry is at its height, from Seymour (1805) to Walker (1854, 1860) to Kinnear (1883) and Elze (1890).

The controversy over the work of the skilled editor and commentator as well as forger, John Payne Collier, is the central event of Shakespeare scholarship and criticism of the middle of the century. He annotated a copy of the Second Folio with faux secretary hand and produced a commentary and edition (1853) based on this chicanery, which contains, nevertheless, many fine and useful comments on Julius Caesar and other plays.
