Course Description:
The objective of this course is to introduce students to the basic understanding of the geologic and hydrologic factors controlling the occurrence, movement, storage, and chemical quality of groundwater, exploration, evaluation, development and management of groundwater resources.

Research project, Lab and field work would form large portion of this course (64% of course grade).

Textbook:
Applied Hydrogeology, 4th Edition by C. W. Fetter
No lab manual

Resource Person: Tony Fleming

USE OF CELL PHONES IN CLASS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED

Exams:
One exam (10%), a project (35%), class participation (1.0%), problem sets from the textbook or from other sources (10%), Literature review (7 articles) (14%), field & lab (24%), and presentation of project (5%) (ppt 1%). Research Project Reports are due by 4:30 p.m. on November 24, 2009

Will try to cover the above topics by October 22, giving you ~ 4 weeks to work on your  project full time.
Your project report is due on November 24, 2009 and presentation (using ppt) will be on December 1 & 3, 2009.

Lab and articles (literature review) may be assigned during the semester.

Article review should not be more than a one double space page ...
the review should include a paragraph of your opinion of the article.
Please note that all reports must be in pdf format and submitted through the Blackboard assignment box.
Nake sure it is the right box before you submit as you cannot undo it.

Articles in pdf format
1. Introuction to groundwater physics by  M. Anderson    DUE  SEPTEMBER 3, 2009

2. Measuring methods for groundwater - surface water ... a review   DUE SEPTEMBER 17, 2009
3. Errors with small volume elastic sample bags.   DUE SEPTEMBER 24, 2009
4. Measuring groundwater-surface  Wetland and hydrology DUE OCTOBER 1, 2009
5. Applications of hydrgeologic settings in groundwater vulnerability mapping in LaGrange County, Indiana
OR Deciding alternative landuse options in a watershed using GIS. DUE OCTOBER 15, 2009
6. Preliminary assessment of water quality along the Red Sea coast near Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. DUE OCTOBER 29, 2009
7. Modeling laboratory observations. DUE NOVEMBER 5, 2009

Bonus
Choose any hydrology article and write a one-page review. You need to provide the article along with your review. DUE NOVEMBER 12, 2009
Projects

Get your project topic as soon as possible (before mid September) and provide me with a tentative project outline by September 24.
See me if you have any difficulties coming up with a research project of your own. I would strongly suggest you start your project early if your research will involve spending significant amount of time outside (outdoor).  It could get cold early, remember, this is Indiana.

ALL REPORTS MUST BE SENT THROUGH THE BLACKBOARD ASSIGNMENT DROP BOX.
ALSO INCLUDE YOUR NAME AND HEADING FOR EACH REPORT SUBMITTED...e.g. IsiorhoReport Writing

Project results will be presented December 4 & 6
using microsft power point slides format (note that the ppt will also be submitted through the assignment drop box).

*Class will not meet from November 3 through November 26.
    * Use this time period to work on your research project.

Labs will be held mostly on Thursdays, however, one weekend may be used for outdoor labs.

Your project report must follow this format:
Use the red lettered words in your subheadings
Title: (what is your report about? not more than 15 words),
Abstract  (a special type of summary of your report that includes problem/question asked, method, result and conclusion),
Introduction (what do you know about the topic and what has been done and why this report i.e. purpose),
Method/Approach (how did you get your information result, data etc.),
Result/Data (self explanatory),
Discussions (what does your result mean?.... you include your opinion here),
Conclusion (two to four sentence summary of your report),
Acknowledgment (if any),
References (what works did you cite?)
Your report should get to me through email by 2:00 p.m. November 26, 2009
(call if I do not acknowledge receiving your report after two business days).
NO HARD COPY WILL BE ACCEPTED
Discussion Board...Use the webct discussion...you can use this for questions or answer any question raised in the board. Do not use this forum for your home work/assignments or exam.
