BUSF M575–04 Intellectual Property Development – A Seminar Study

Entrepreneurship involves innovative and creative thinking, proactive and risk-taking behavior on the
part of individuals, and is centrally concerned with the identification and exploitation of business
opportunities. Entrepreneurship, thus, is best viewed as a process, which brings people, opportunities,
and resources together in ways that create value for customers, shareholders, and society as a whole.

This course utilizes intellectual property developed at one of the Purdue campuses and owned by
Purdue Research Foundation. Students, working in groups, are given the proprietary information, and
asked to assemble a business / product launch plan. Using a business plan as a tool, commercial
potential of the intellectual property is developed and communicated. Upon the completion of the
course, students may be able to take the developed business plan to a business plan competition(s) or
even launch a new commercial entity.

Because of the nature of the subject matter, this is an unstructured course. Students engaging in this course
must be capable of functioning in a less structured course environment. Likewise, this course is designed
with the potential of having our students compete against the best of other schools. Consequently, effective
teamwork is critical.
