Research

Central themes to my research program are conservation of endangered reptiles and the management and restoration of habitats to help wildlife. My students, staff and I are involved in numerous empirical and applied studies throughout the Midwestern United States on reptiles, amphibians, mammals and birds. I am considered to be an expert on a variety of species, particularly the imperiled Eastern Massasauga and federally threatened Copperbelly Watersnake. I take an applied approach, considering not only the basic ecology of the species, but how that relates to habitat restoration and land management practices, so that I can contribute to improving methodology.

Environmental Resources Center

To promote wildlife and habitat conservation beyond the research, I founded and now direct the Environmental Resources Center at IPFW. The ERC is an expansion of the former Center for Reptile and Amphibian Conservation and Management. The mission of the ERC is “to promote the understanding and conservation of the natural resources of the region through scientific research, educational opportunities and outreach.” For more information about the ERC, please see http://erc.ipfw.edu. As Director, I see my role as promoting faculty capacity and enhancing their activity at IPFW, engaging the community on conservation issues and promoting the IPFW brand.

Administrative Activities

I am also interested in academic leadership. I served two terms as Chair of Biology at IPFW, and am currently the Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences.

Associate Dean, College of Arts and Sciences, Indiana-University-Purdue University Fort Wayne

My principal responsibilities as Associate Dean relate to faculty development, in particular working with junior faculty by helping them understand requirements for promotion and tenure and helping them demonstrate their accomplishments. I am also involved in facilitating programmatic review, working with departments to help them move through that reflective process effectively.

Chair, Department of Biology, Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne

From 2003 through 2010, I served as Chair of the Department of Biology at IPFW. The unit is large and complex with 20 teaching faculty and staff, and five clerical and administrative staff positions. Undergraduate enrollment is about 500 and there is also a robust and growing MS graduate program. The high research productivity of the faculty relies on a substantial infrastructure which includes numerous research and education laboratories as well as off-site facilities.
