Homework information

  1. Read the instructions for each assignment carefully. The instructions for activities in your textbook are written in Spanish for a reason: you need to learn to read and use the language in meaningful ways. You will be held responsible for understanding the instructions. Note that in some exercises you will first need to select the appropriate verb from a list and then put it in the correct mood/tense/person. Nearly every assigned exercise is designed to have you practice and use specific aspects of Spanish grammar and word usage.  Make sure you read and understand the material before you write out the exercise.  Also, take a good look at the model: it shows the general pattern for your answers, but note that individual parts of your answer will ordinarily be different. Most of the exercises in the grammar book are designed to get you to use and practice specific grammatical elements; if your answers don't incorporate the grammatical concepts just presented in the text, you are probably missing something.
  2. When answering questions as part of homework assignments, try to use complete sentences; that means, use a verb in its proper tense and form. You need all the practice in verb use that you can get. This recomendation also applies to the questions over the reading selections.
  3. You are welcomed and even encouraged to work in groups, but do your own work. Copying the work of someone else will usually result in a grade reduction: splitting the grade between the individuals involved.
  4. Indicate on your paper all corrections made in/after class. I will try to explain in each class the grammar assigned for the following class. The written homework is designed to help you master that material, because you must exert some active effort in this learning process. In class we will usually go over the written homework so you can see where you are having problems with the points in question and so you can learn from your mistakes. If you made mistakes, be honest enough to indicate any changes you made in class, indicating with a different color of ink/pencil any such corrections (or marking  corrections in some other obvious way, such as with the letter C). I will do my best to be be honest and fair with you, and I expect the same from you. Note: Do not erase your original answer when you correct it in class because you might be changing a correct answer into an incorrect one.
  5. Go over the work after it has been graded and returned to you. Sometimes your attempted corrections in class will be wrong. Go over the material to make sure you know it, and so you can avoid making the same mistakes in the future.
  6. Ask questions. At any point in the process feel free to ask questions: in class, after class, in my office (CM252), by phone (IPFW: 481-6633; home: 485-7632), or via e-mail (jehle@ipfw.edu).
