Shoebox Spectrograph
The shoebox spectrograph is a low budget device for examining spectral
colors. The light that enters the spectrograph can come directly
from a luminous object or can be light transmission through an object,
reflection of light from the object, or even fluorescence from the
object. If one uses one's eye as the sole detector the shoebox
spectrograph costs ~ $1.00 in parts. If one replaces their eye
with a webcam (or some other device for taking photographs), the cost
per units is ~$25.00. The advantage of taking photographs is that
the pictures are spectrally accurate (to about 1.5nm) representations
of the spectra.
