The attraction of surfaces of revolution

The gravitational field of a massive surface of revolution is
calculated along its axis of symmetry, using methods of
single-variable calculus.  The main example is an elementary
derivation of Newton's theorem on the attractive force exerted by a
hollow sphere, which made a good discussion topic for a first-year
college mathematics course.
