Phase-Contrast- View living cells. The lenses can detect differences in ransmitted light and translate them into patterns of shadows and light so that different organelles in cell can be observed.
Fluorescence- uses UV light as source. Some microbes fluoresce, but can use specific antibodies with attached Fl dye
