- plasma membrane is a phopholipid bilayer. Sterols are rarely found in eubacteria but commonly found in eukaryotic cell membranes
- cell wall composed of peptidoglycan
- protein synthesis inhibited by agents that effect 70S ribosomes not 80S
- most are non-photosynthetic
