T-Th Noon

A.  The most effective aspects of this course were:

•         Lectures 66

•         The reaction papers because we had to show our ability/knowledge of the course study and lecture. However, I do think the professor was overly critical of the length for the reaction paper. Isn’t it quality over quantity? Would Dr. Diclementi rather us babble for 2 or 3? 67

•         The course very effective on my major 68

•         Her lectures were organized by one thing leading to another.  We never jumped around like some other classes do. I liked it when she related the information to real-life situations. 69

•         Video tapes and like things that showed examples of psychology in action rather than just in lecture.70

•         Constantly asking if there were any questions in case someone didn’t understand something. 71

•         The relating to real life situations was very effective. The lecture organization also allowed an early dismissal of the class on several occasions. 72

•         The emphasis on student responsibility and the opportunity to succeed based on a student will to thrive is what makes me learn in your class. 73

•         The excitement of how she teaches. 74

•         I really like the subject and Dr. D explains the subject with enthusiasm, and in terms I can understand. 75

•         Being able to understand the teacher and the way she makes the learning fun. 76

•         The most effective aspect of this course is being able to get a study guide for each test and going over it in class. 77

•         The study guides were a very important aspect.  There is just so much information, but by  having study guides a person can narrow there topics and study what is relative to the course. 78

•         The use of examples and real life experience offered. 80

•         The examples provided to help explain the material made it easier to understand. 81

•         The way she treated her students.  She treated us like people and not “little students’ that don’t know anything. 82

•         Class discussions 83

•         Lively, engaging lectures 84

•         Examples and descriptions of topics 85

•         Writing reaction papers helped study 86

•         Pretty much just the lecture, does a good job of explaining. 87

•         Dropping lowest test.  Extra credit (reaction paper, SI) 88

•         Learning things that aren’t thought about every day and going in depth a little more than most students. 89

•         The different ways to earn points such as papers, experiments, SI.  Grades are not only based on test scores. 91

•         The lectures, all of the material we needed to know was covered in great detail during lecture. 92

•         The way material in the course could be explained to help with learning. 93

•         The real life examples in lectures and SI Sessions. 94

•         The professors lectures. She is a very interesting professor. 95

•         I like the course because Dr. D made it fun. She wasn’t boring. She made it easy to come to class. I haven’t fell asleep. 96

•         The lectures examples and reactions papers, they gave us a real world reason to use psychology. 97

•         The way material was presented. I enjoy humor within the lectures and the examples were helpful. 99

•         It helps me with my major in Political Science, that I added Psychology to my major. In order to be an attorney, looking for cause and effort, as well as how the mind works as essential to excelling in my career. 100

•         Open discussion times; reaction papers (helped me to better understand terms by putting them into context. 101

•         The interaction between student and teaching during a lecture 102

•         The knowledge taught. 103

•         It was interesting. 104

•         When the lectures were about how things should be done or how to do them. 105

•         Having SI & study guides 106

•         Class discussion and lectures. 107

•         Just the knowledge we are gaining is great. 109

•         The lectures. 110

•         Study guides before tests. 111

•         Demonstrations by the instructor or using examples to teach the students something relatively hard to understand. 112

•         Having extra credit opportunities built into the course was wonderful! 114

•         All of the information learned. 115

•         The stuff on memorization I guess. 116

•         The proffessor’s (sic) enthusiasm for psychology. She makes if (sic) fun. 117

•         I think lecture was most the most effective aspect. (sic) 118

•         Getting credit for going to SI sessions. 119

•         The first study guide helped a lot with the test. But the second study guide didn’t really go along with the test. Most of what was on the study guide wasn’t even on the test and what was on the test wasn’t on the study guide. 120

•         The study guides helped a lot! 121

•         Explanation of chapters; study guides before test. 122

•         Lectures, instructor gave many clear, everyday life examples to the topics in the book. DiClementi explained the technicle (sic) term into more simple terms the (sic) I could understand more easily. 123

•         The understanding of psychology. 124

•         Watching videos on real life situation of topics we were discussing. The required SI sessions were also very helpful for preperation (sic) for the test (the practice test were most helpful). 125

B.  The least effective aspects of this course were:

•         None 66

•         The research assignments were least effective in my mind. I felt like I was being used and forced into participation. 67

•         The class size was too large. I think they should have more psy120 class with fewer students in them. Possible restricting class size to 25 or there about. 69

•         I didn’t understand the assignment given (reaction papers), now to do them and the real  relevance, therefore they were very uneffective for me. If I had understood them better they might have made more of a difference. 70

•         Too many people in the class. Not enough one on one. 71

•         Mainly just the size of the class. 72

•         My note taking struggles because of a lack of overhead or chalkboard notes. This can all be corrected by a little more emphasis on writing down main terms and examples. 73

•         The book. 74

•         Its seems like we take 2 or 3 days to go over the first chapter and only 1 day to go over the other material. In some ways I feel like I’m getting cheated on that subject matter. 75

•         Teacher -> student relationship/ratio 76

•         Writing the papers for me because I just write what I learn in the book and don’t really add much to that. 77

•         Not knowing what was going to be on the test. The 1st test was good. Lots of it was from the study guide. I bases that on the 2nd test and it was nothing like that. The study guide barely helped. 78

•         All the independent reading assignments for those that aren’t readers. 80

•         Making it mandatory to go to SI sessions. 81

•         I think the SI should be optional and not required. It makes no sense to me to give so many points for something that most people wouldn’t consider going to. 82

•         Dry, boring text 84

•         Writing reaction papers. Very hard to find topic and write 2-3 pages about it. 85

•         Nothing 86

•         I hate manditory SI. 87

•         Kind of fast through some materials. 89

•         Supplemental Instruction (the material covered @ the SI sessions was never really stuff that we were taught or that had relevance to our tests.) 92

•         Occasionally instructor would become sidetracked. 93

•         The papers due on the day of the test. 94

•         The mandatory SI Sessions 95

•         I don’t like the papers we have to do. 96

•         The reading in the book. 97

•         Supplemental instruction was based on what other classes were doing rather than our class. 99

•         I found none. 100

•         SI sessions; material on the study guide never being covered in class (the instructor most likely ran out of time). 101

•         The huge class size. 102

•         I don’t know. 103

•         Details and facts about scientific things. 105

•         None. 106

•         Research papers. I don’t think writing papers helps students learn. 107

•         The papers. 110

•         The least effective aspect is a lot of lecturing. 112

•         All of the information forgotten because there was little time and abudance of information. 115

•         Perhaps more explanation of the after class activities, such as the experiments, and study sessions; going over some of the information found in the study guides. 117

•         The papers we must write. 118

•         I thought that since the class was an introductory course - that that made it difficult, but for the least effective aspects: didn’t know exactly what to take notes on, papers. 119

•         Time coverage on some chapters - seemed like we just “flew thru” a lot of material. 120

•         When we majorly covered something and it wasn’t on the test. 122

•         I didn’t know what to study for the tests until a week before they were given. 123

•         Study guide. 124

•         SI instructors weren’t always knowledgeable. 125

C.  The best ways to improve this course would be to:

•         Have more defined structure for notes 66

•         Focus the subject matter and provide a more objective approach. 67

•         This is the best way **** instructor is given 68

•         Nothing. This is an ideal class. 69

•         Explain the assignments better. Everything else is good. 70

•         Have smaller class sizes. 71

•         Do more hands-on activities to grasp an understanding of the psychological areas covered. 72

•         Incorporate a multimedia presentation of the material. You strive at perfectionism and I can tell this would put you over the top as a teacher who really helps the student grasp important information. 73

•         Improve the book, maybe use color pictures. 74

•         More consistency in the tests. The first test went by her study guide, the second one did not.  I was not prepared for some of the questions asked on test 2. 75

•         None. I think this class is awesome. 76

•         To write down more of what we say in lecture. I like that because I don’t get behind when your talking. 77

•         Be more consistent with the study guides.  If you are going to have a study guide, use it towards the test. 78

•         Relate lecture and reading more from the book. 80

•         Nothing.  I feel I am learning the material adequately. 81

•         Have more visual things rather than lecture all the time.  I think if you bring in more visual things and get the class involved, one it will help us better w/understanding and two it will improve the class. 82

•         I would like to see more assignments not necessarily written assignments or projects but just other ways to use the material from class.  Instead of NO EXCEPTION policies maybe some exceptions. 83

•         Smaller class sizes 84

•         Watch more videos 86

•         Make the learning more interactive w/students. 87

•         Use different materials other than wipe off board, like some overheads or slides. 89

•         Find away to balance credit hours with experiments and papers, it’s hard to get it all done with work from four other classes. 93

•         Have a few scheduled quizzes to encourage review of material on a daily or weekly basis instead of the night before the test. 94

•         Make the SI worth 0 points if the student averages a B or better on tests. 95

•         Quit writing papers. 96

•         To remove or lower the required number of SI sessions. They are really hard to get to. 97

•         Cover all material on exams, not just beginning sections. 99

•         She needs to teach more classes! 100

•         Make the opportunity for study groups available (besides SI) 101

•         Make the research classes more available. 103

•         When explaining scientific things to use charts and diagrams. 105

•         Could have less people per class for more individual time. 106

•         No More PAPERS! 107

•         More visuals of phychology (sic) 109

•         Provide the lectures in a more organized fashion, as in more organization when writing on the board. Also follow book. 110

•         Explain the research assignments better. 111

•         Cut down on a little lecture time and do more demonstrations in front of class in order for students to relate to something. 112

•         Not so much material to learn so quickly. 113

•         Nix the research projects, they have no purpose to us. 115

•         Padded seats, bigger armwrests (sic). Exactly where is my 2K bucks going? Not to a sander to get rid of the vulgarities on all the seats thats (sic) for sure. 116

•         Perhaps just the intigration (sic) of needed material for the test into some of the class. Like a day before the test study session where we could ask questions about confusing information. 117

•         More visual tools and discriptions (sic) on board. 118

•         Make it a little more interesting; I had a hard time picking up on what exactly I needed for notes, but I have always been given notes; maybe study guides could be handed out at the beginning of the chapter instead of a week before the test. 119

•         Make the study guides match the tests more. 120

•         Try to get us to interact more with what you are talking about. 122

•         Give study guides for the chapters a few weeks sooner. 123

•         To be lectured what is on the test. 124

•         More discussions on topics and issues related to today’s events. 125

D.  Further comments:

•         She has done a wonderful job of projecting ideas that are new to some in a way that makes them tangible to all. 66

•         The instructor is very willing to help-understand to the students. She is very good instructor. 68

•         Try to find a few more things other than straight lecture (not that the lecture is bad or boring.) 70

•         Instructor’s sense of humor is great. 72

•         Dr. D is a really good prof. She makes the class fun! 74

•         I think SI should be extra credit and not required, because some of the classes are a joke, not helpful at all. However, I do enjoy psych 120 and the lectures. 75

•         Overall good class. Thankful for all the x-tra credit given. 78

•         Class is fun most of the time but certain subjects get boring and somehow could be spiced up a little bit more. 112

•         I think this class is very interesting and the professor is really good and not boring. 113

•         Dr. DiClementi is a very knowledgeable professor. She makes the subject of psychology fun & entertaining. She often cites current research and studies to support topics we are covering which lends relevance to our psychology understanding. I wish Dr. DiClementi taught more psychology courses. 114

•         You’re doing a great job and your jokes make class bearable and worth coming. 115

•         Doing the best w/what I consider to be a very boring subject, but I was told sociology was worse. 116
