My experience with my cat and my brother's cat is that sometimes when something in their environment changes, eg, the whole thing, they get upset and go hide somewhere for several days until they decide to forgive you and come get some food. so that may be what he is doing, in which case there isn't a lot to do to get him to come back, although you might try going outside and calling his name periodically in case he is feeling briefly more adam-sick than annoyed at having his life upset. Eugenie H. *********************************************************************** Dec. 4, 1997 ***(after Thanksgiving, Pierre is almost back to pre-journey weight)*** I am glad to hear that pierre is getting back into shape. I think my cat, sophie, has seen pictures of him on his web page and fallen in love or something, because she is trying her hardest to become a suitable companion. now that the weather has gotten colder she doesn't want to go outside, so all she does is stay inside and eat. she is becoming quite round. when she jumps off the counter now there is a considerable thump. Freddy, on the other hand, spends whole days outside exploring. my mother says he is becoming arboreal. he likes the ash tree and the fruit trees best, and sits on lower branches looking like the cheshire cat, or maybe like a skunk pretending to be the cheshire cat, because he has long black and white fur. I got to see them over thanksgiving. They didn't get any turkey. You are such a cute little baby. Your mom has been sending us pictures every holiday! We miss getting your pictures, but we're very happy that you like your new home. Your dad also took you to the vet. He's a good man. We don't like going to the vet, but it's important for kitties to stay healthy. We belong to Rachel and Sam; our names our Jake and Little Bea. Rachel was so happy to meet you. She got to rub your belly in person last June. We just saw your mom yesterday. Bea met her for the first time. I (Jake) am a big, striped grey cat who is also part Siamese. I have pretty blue eyes. My little sister is only four months old. She is black with white spots and has yellow eyes. Let me know if you want a picture of us! We're so cute! I (Jake) used to live with Rachel's dad who also went to the U. of Chicago. He worked as a nuclear physicist and engineer at Argonne Nat. Lab for forty years. He's retired. I also used to live with Rachel's mom, who has a Master's degree in math; she teaches at a college. So you and I have a lot in common. Rachel has to go to her voice lesson now, and she's helping me with the computer, so please write back soon! My kitty Missy just returned from a thankfully shorter outdoor adventure, and is at the vet getting spayed for her troubles even as I type. So beware, running off sometimes leads to loss of internal organs! Stick to the turkey and sparrows, swan probably doesn't taste that good anyhow. (I'm guessing, no firsthand experience!) We should arrange a meeting between you and my thesis advisor's cat, he's named Faraday after the English scientist, Michael Faraday. Yesterday I was cleaning off my kitchen counter and came across the letter you sent me in August, so I got on the computer and looked up your web page. Honest to God, I was on it for an hour and laughed til I cried! The stuff on there with Pierre is hysterical! How did you get so creative? One thing, though - I know for a fact that Pierre is NOT named after a famous mathematician, he is named after the sound a cat flying through the air would make. Subject: Steiner, Pierre & birds Dear Dr. Coffman, Your Steiner surfaces webpage was posted as a reference for an algebraic geometry course here; it is very helpful--thank you! I also like the pictures of Pierre. He seems like a great cat--I love cats--but please don't let him hunt songbirds. (I apologize for lecturing you about this if you're already careful.) Recreational predation by housecats isn't "natural" and does more damage to songbird populations (who have enough to worry about) than you might think. Pierre probably can't tell the difference between a common species and an unusual species which is passing through on migration. If he likes to wander around outside, and obviously he does, please make sure that there's no place in his "hunting grounds" where he can hide and surprise birds who come to feed, bathe, etc. Thank you, Elizabeth H. ********************************************************************** Nov. 16, 2003.
